“Man has taken the horse under his protection. How he treats it is a token of his culture. He interferes with the lives of these animals, with their reproduction and upbringing. The animals have surrendered their wild state to live in his service, but in doing so they have remained true to themselves and their nature. Nowhere is man so close to nature as he is when in harmony with a being so rich in feelings and responses and at the same time so mute. If we wish to understand horses we must forget our human classifications and reach out into a region where things are not just seen and heard, but felt and experienced.”
